Antioxidant Potential and Heavy Metal Accumulation of Hygrocybe conica

Abstract


Mushrooms are important natural resources in natural ecosystems. It has been used for centuries as a means of food, medicine, and religious rituals for humans. In this study, an edible species Hygrocybe conica (Schaeff.) P. Kumm. Total antioxidant level (TAS), total oxidant level (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI) and Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn contents of mushrooms were determined. Mushroom samples were collected from the province of Hatay-Antakya (Turkey). Ethanol extracts of the collected mushroom samples were obtained. TAS, TOS and OSI values were measured using Rel Assay kits. Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn contents were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. As a result of the studies, the TAS value of H.conica was determined as 3.143 ± 0.146, the TOS value as 10.355 ± 0.233 and the OSI value as 0.331 ± 0.0021. It was observed that the Fe content of H.conica was at high levels. As a result, it was determined that H.conica mushroom has antioxidant potential.
